A Mold Designer is expected to aid in developing a project directly or indirectly by creating or assisting with developing designs, models, specifications, and drawings. They will develop engineering concepts and solutions, discuss material options, and use CAD software to develop models and drawings to complete molds to customer specifications. Working with Project Managers and Leaders to understand customer needs, the Mold Designer will optimize designs for production intent while also taking into account the customer’s design needs to save machining costs wherever possible.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Import, manipulate, and process customer 2D and 3D models in preparation for a quote, feasibility, or design, utilizing standard file and directory naming conventions. Must have a proficient working knowledge of Cimatron Design software. 
  • Upon kick-off of work, meet directly with the program manager to understand all requirements and deadlines for job design work. 
  • Maintain up-to-date customer standards. Understand and follow customer Mold design standards and specifications.  
  • Create and manage design libraries. Utilize libraries to ensure Mold components are standardized as much as possible. Maintain a detailed list of standard components. Design utilizing standard libraries. 
  • Support Project Managers in product feasibility. Create initial design concepts (for customer needs) and detail files for the shop foreman (for the shop’s manufacturing needs). 
  • Create and issue designs at each specified stage. (Preliminary Semi-Final, and Final) and revise designs as necessary from lineups supplied by the Program Manager. 
  • Manage workload and delegate work to junior designers to meet deadlines from the Program Managers and Shop Foreman. 
  • Train junior designers to use Cimatron design software proficiently. 
  • Create and export electrode files to the EDM Department. 
  • Completes quality checklists for each design stage (Preliminary and Final) to ensure files are complete before posting to the floor or the customer. 
  • Send material list items out for quote and issue Purchase Orders to appropriate suppliers, ensuring deliveries and pricing meets quoted budgets.
